What does your business headshot say about you?
Does it say, I’m a professional, I care about my business, and want to make a great first impression?
Or is it a little confused or out of date?
Your Headshot is your introduction, it should work as hard as you do.
I’m based at PLATF9RM in Brighton, a workspace that’s become the perfect home for my headshot photography. It’s a great place to meet prospective clients, and I’ve even claimed one of the meeting rooms as my go-to ad-hoc studio. It’s amazing how well it transforms for a shoot. The setup feels relaxed, flexible, and very ‘Brighton,’ which suits my style perfectly.
Your profile picture is often the first thing people judge you on. Whether it’s LinkedIn, your website, or even your dating profile, that one tiny image says so much about us, and we only have a split second to make a great impression.
Here’s a challenge. Head over to your profile, have a good look at your photograph and go through this checklist:
- Is it a recent picture of you?
If your photo is pre-pandemic or you’ve changed your hairstyle/colour/etc. It’s most definitely time for an update. Your clients want to see the current you. - Are your eyes visible? Sunglasses are fine in holiday pictures, but not in profile photos. People connect with your eyes before they connect with anything you say.
- Is it cropped from a group photo?
If you’re holding a beer, or if anyone else’s shoulder, hair, or hand is in your profile picture, that’s not the most professional look in the world…
- Does it look like your brand?
Your photo should match the energy of your brand. Professional but approachable? Bold and creative? Calm and grounded? - How’s the lighting?
If it’s dark, dingy, yellow, or shadowy, then you may want to invest in a professional to help you. Bright, clean, and flattering light really makes all the difference. - Does it make people want to know you?
This is a difficult question to answer yourself. Does it feel warm, confident, and approachable? A good profile photo invites people in and welcomes them to reach out to you.
